We are a research-based advocacy group, campaigning to prioritise building co- and redesign over demolition & rebuild. We aim to generate debate and raise awareness by providing research-based guidance to make co- and redesign a mainstream redevelopment option for ageing buildings.
As a team of researchers, government and industry partners, we seek to open up opportunities and broaden definitions of what future architectural activity in the renewal of apartment housing might look like – in short, how people can work together with what is at hand.
Our work is based on the successful research project– Co-Design Guide for Transforming Ageing Apartment Buildings 2021-24 (LP200100053) supported by the Australian Research Council.
The Co-Design Guide will assist in adapting and upgrading ageing apartment buildings to better meet changing economic, social and environmental needs. The objectives are to:
- improve the quality, amenity and value of old apartments for residents
- support redesign to become a feasible alternative to the obsolescence-based demolish & rebuild approaches
- incorporate co-design as a standard approach in the redevelopment of ageing housing.
- decrease the environmental footprint of cities by extending the life of buildings and supporting the circular economy.
- boost the productivity of the architecture profession and construction industry by unlocking ageing housing stock for redevelopment
